The City of New Westminster hosted a special ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, June 20th for subscribers and local residents. The second Urban Solar Garden is a rooftop-mounted, 50 kW, 156 panel photovoltaic array that allows local residents, businesses and non-profit organizations that have invested in the project access to renewable energy “Made in New West for New West”.
The City’s Urban Solar Garden is a signature initiative that demonstrates local leadership in renewable energy and community engagement. This second solar array follows in the footsteps of the first Urban Solar Garden installation that was completed at Queensborough Community Centre in July 2018. This initiative aligns with the policy objectives outlined in the City’s Community Energy and Emissions Plan and Official Community Plan.
Urban Solar Garden subscribers include local residents, businesses and non-profit organizations with New Westminster Electric Utility accounts. Power generated by the array is credited back to each subscriber’s electrical utility bill quarterly, in proportion to their investment, for up to 25 years.
